Alice Pike Barney, born Cincinnati, OH - Child with Monkey - 1908 - T-Shirt

A pastel portrait of a curly-haired child glancing back over a bare shoulder, with a small dark animal held close at the lower left.

Visual Elements & Composition

The child's face is the clear focus. Soft pink flushes the cheeks, the small parted red mouth draws the eye, and the bare shoulders are modelled in warm ochre and rose. Dusty peach and warm brown carry the figure, while a diffuse field of sage green and mauve fills the background, with faint diagonal marks running through it. The companion animal sits in loose, smoky strokes at lower left and falls largely into shadow, so the composition builds toward the child's direct, lively look. The date 1908 is inscribed at upper left.

Meaning & Symbolism

Portraits of young children paired with exotic animals have a long history, signalling affection and a playful sense of companionship. Here that pairing feels informal. The sheet reads as a moment of play caught in a glance rather than a posed likeness. Alice Pike Barney (1857-1931) was an American painter, patron and salon host associated with Washington, D.C., who worked across pastel, oil and other media. Her portraits of children and family subjects from the first decade of the twentieth century used soft colour and feathered, loose handling to capture spontaneity and personality. The original pastel is held in the Smithsonian American Art Museum collection.

Wearing the Artwork

On a tee, the image sits across the chest, so the child's glance meets whoever is standing in front of the wearer. The soft peach and sage palette and the airy, sketch-like finish read clearly at conversation distance, and the animal stays tucked into the lower corner, where it belongs in the original.
