Alice Pike Barney, born Cincinnati, OH - Gold Turban - n.d. - T-Shirt

A pastel portrait of a seated man in a gold turban and mustard-gold jacket, set against a green and blue-grey ground with a single rose-pink scarf at his throat.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sitter is shown three-quarters toward the viewer, his head turned slightly left and his gaze directed outward. Gold dominates: the folds of the turban catch warm highlights along the crown, and the jacket repeats that colour down a row of small buttons. The face is modelled in soft olive and cream, with a dark moustache and brows drawn in quick strokes. Sea green and grey-blue fill the loose background, and a grey cloth occupies the lower left. The rose-pink scarf is the only warm accent against the cool ground, which keeps the eye on the head.

Meaning & Symbolism

The turban and costume belong to the Orientalist tradition that circulated widely in European and American portraiture from the late nineteenth into the early twentieth century. Here dress works as a vehicle for colour and mood rather than a record of everyday attire. The sitter appears in theatrical costume, and the decorative palette carries the character of the piece.

Alice Pike Barney, born in Cincinnati, Ohio, was a painter and pastellist later associated with Washington, D.C., where she hosted a well-known salon. This undated work reflects her pastel portraiture, in which bold colour and loose handling of the surface convey character and atmosphere. It is held in the Smithsonian American Art Museum collection.

Worn Close to the Body

A tee is seen at arm's length and in motion, not framed across a wall. The gold turban and jacket are the first things the eye reads, and the pink scarf gives the portrait its single point of warmth, so the design holds its shape as the wearer moves.
