Alice Pike Barney, born Cincinnati, OH - Hollywood - 1927 - T-Shirt

A pastel portrait of a smiling young woman in a close red cloche hat, caught in a quick, open moment of good humour.

Visual Elements & Composition

Vermilion red dominates the sheet, filling the cloche hat and the rose-red jacket that runs to the lower edge. Against the warm kraft-tan paper, that red makes the sitter's smile the focal point. Her face is pale and warmly modelled, with rose on the cheeks and a bright red mouth showing a row of teeth. Pale cream and grey-blue strokes rise from the lower left, and the tan ground shows through at the left and upper right. The figure is shown head and shoulders only, turned to the viewer's right, in a tight, close frame.

Meaning & Symbolism

The short bobbed hair and snug cloche are markers of the fashion of the later 1920s, and the portrait presents a modern, lively figure of that decade. The loose, quick pastel strokes add to the sense of a moment caught rather than a formal pose. Alice Pike Barney, born in Cincinnati, Ohio, was a painter and pastellist who later became associated with Washington, D.C., where she hosted a well-known salon. The catalogue record gives the title Hollywood and the date 1927, and the work is held in the Smithsonian American Art Museum collection.

Designed for the Tee

A portrait built around one bright focal point suits a front print: the smile sits at the centre of the chest, where the eye lands first. The composition is contained within its own edges, so the figure reads as a complete image rather than a fragment. The warm red and tan carry the eye across the shirt in a single glance, and the artist's quick, confident strokes stay legible from across the room.
