Alice Pike Barney, born Cincinnati, OH - Laura in Fichu - 1900 - T-Shirt

A bust-length pastel portrait of a young woman with dark, full hair, gazing upward against a cool grey-blue haze.

Visual Elements & Composition

The figure fills a vertical frame, her head lifted and her eyes turned up and to the side. A narrow black velvet choker sits at her throat, and a sheer white fichu drapes over her shoulders and is knotted in a soft bow at the centre of the bodice. Those two notes of black and white give the picture its only hard definition. Everything else dissolves into chalky, feathered pastel strokes: ivory white, pale skin, dark brown hair and a background of cool grey with pale turquoise passages. The lightly flushed cheeks and parted lips keep the face soft rather than sharp.

Meaning & Symbolism

The title names the sitter by her costume. The fichu was a traditional neckpiece, and here it carries a softly feminine, conventional elegance typical of Edwardian portraiture. The upward glance and parted lips read as reverie, as though the sitter is looking beyond the edge of the picture. An inscription at lower right, To my DAUGHTER, marks the work as a personal gift. Alice Pike Barney (1857–1931) was an American painter born in Cincinnati, Ohio, who worked in Washington, D.C., where her studio and salon drew artists, writers and musicians. She favoured tonal modelling over hard outline, and this 1900 pastel belongs to the intimate family portraits she made in those years.

Made for the Wearer

Pastel softness translates well to cotton. The fine blur between hair, drapery and ground is the kind of detail that rewards a close look, and a tee is worn close to the body, so the figure sits across the chest and shoulders where the eye naturally rests. The black choker and white fichu place the strongest contrast right at the neckline, the spot you see first when you pull the shirt on. Wear it as a quiet reminder of a portrait made as a private gift.
