Alice Pike Barney, born Cincinnati, OH - Laura in Green Cape - 1907 - T-Shirt

A bust-length portrait of a woman in a green cape, rendered in soft pastel against a warm tan ground.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sitter turns three-quarters toward the viewer, with short, brown, softly curled hair and a faint smile. Her face is finely modelled in pale tones, with grey-green eyes and red lips. The cape dominates the lower half in broad, blended planes of sage green. Its collar carries a band of blue and gold embroidery that meets at the front, and two gold rosette clasps fasten it at the chest. Behind her, strokes of tan and olive sweep diagonally across the upper half of the sheet. The work is inscribed and dated at lower left, August 1907.

Meaning & Symbolism

The title identifies the sitter by her garment, so the cape and its embroidered collar become the portrait's principal decorative statement. The calm glance and composed mouth present her as poised and self-assured. Alice Pike Barney (1857–1931), born in Cincinnati, Ohio, worked in Washington, D.C., where her studio and salon drew artists, writers and musicians. She was known for atmospheric portraits that favour tonal modelling over hard outline. This 1907 pastel shows her command of decorative costume and of colour balanced against a neutral ground. The original is held in the Smithsonian American Art Museum collection.

Why It Suits This Tee

A bust-length portrait is built around the head and shoulders, so it reads clearly at the chest, where the viewer's eye settles on the face first and then the green cape. The composition is quiet and centred, which lets the sitter's direct gaze hold attention when the wearer is seen up close or from across a room. Each detail of the pastel, from the gold clasps to the blended greens, carries onto the shirt as a single, unbroken image.
