Alice Pike Barney, born Cincinnati, OH - Nude against Screen - 1911 - T-Shirt

A standing female nude with a short dark bob leans against a gold screen covered in pink roses, set in the Paris period of Alice Pike Barney's career.

Visual Elements & Composition

The figure fills most of the tall vertical sheet, shown in near full length. Her body is built from pale cream and rose tones, softly blended so the skin reads as luminous rather than sharply outlined. Her head turns in profile to the left, one arm lifts to rest at her shoulder, and the other hangs loosely at her side.

Behind her, ochre gold dominates the ground. Pink roses, sage green leaves and dark branching stems spread across the whole surface, so the screen becomes the frame and the figure sits inside a field of ornament. The signature and date in the upper left read Paris and 1911.

Meaning & Symbolism

The pairing of an unclothed figure with flowers and a gilded ground follows a long tradition in which the female body is placed within a decorative, garden-like space. Here the screen presents the woman as a decorative presence rather than a narrative one. Her short, modern haircut and poised stance tie her to the fashions of the early twentieth century, when the decorative interior and the contemporary woman were often shown together.

Alice Pike Barney (American, 1857–1931) was a painter and pastellist who worked in Washington, D.C., and Paris. This sheet, dated 1911, shows her Paris-period method: soft figure modelling set against richly patterned surroundings.

Designed for the Shirt

A tee carries this composition across the chest, so the figure and its gold screen read as one image at a glance. The roses and branching stems wrap the full front of the shirt, and the pale figure sits at the center where the eye settles first.
