Alice Pike Barney, born Cincinnati, OH - Nude with Fruit - n.d. - T-Shirt

A pastel half-length nude turns her head back over one shoulder, meeting the viewer with a faint smile against a swirling green ground.

Visual Elements & Composition

The figure is seen in three-quarter view from behind, her body turned toward us while her head twists back. Auburn hair falls in soft waves around a pale face, the eyes lowered slightly and the lips a warm red. Her shoulders and upper torso are built from pale cream and yellow-pink tones, modelled with light and shade along the back and arm. At the lower right, a small rounded pink and mauve fruit sits near her hand, and that detail gives the work its title. Behind her, green and blue-green strokes curve around the head like a halo, so the cool field frames the warm figure on every side.

Meaning & Symbolism

The work is less an allegory than a study in mood. The sidelong glance creates a quiet invitation, the moment of a woman caught looking back. The swirling ground places her outside any interior, and the pink fruit adds the one warm accent that balances the green. Alice Pike Barney (American, 1857–1931) was a painter and pastellist who worked in Washington, D.C., and Paris. Her later pastels moved toward freer, more colourful handling, with broad curving strokes that carry the eye around the figure. This sheet, with its loose background and softened forms, shows that looser approach. The original is held in the Smithsonian American Art Museum collection.

Wearing the Glance

A front-facing print puts the figure's shoulders across your own chest, so the glance over the shoulder lands directly on whoever is looking at you. The halo of green strokes sits around the head at the centre of the shirt, where the eye goes first. Pastel softness, a single pink accent, and a figure caught mid-turn give this design a calm presence that suits everyday wear.
