Alice Pike Barney, born Cincinnati, OH - The Tanagra Figure - 1924 - T-Shirt

A seated woman in profile, dressed in black with a white rose at her bodice, lifts a small golden figurine to her eye line in this 1924 pastel by Alice Pike Barney.

Visual Elements & Composition

Near black fills almost a third of the picture, forming the sitter's gown and the dark field that makes the pale ground glow. Soft grey and ivory dominate the background, streaked with muted green and worked in loose, broad strokes that leave the paper showing at the edges. The figurine, rendered in antique gold and ochre, is the brightest point in the composition. Her raised hand holds it in the centre of the frame, and her other hand rests on the arm of a pale wooden chair. The signature "Alice Barney 1924" sits at the upper right.

Meaning & Symbolism

The title points to Tanagra figures, small terracotta statuettes of draped women from ancient Greece. They were rediscovered in the nineteenth century and collected widely in Europe and America, and their graceful, wrapped poses became a favourite in the decorative arts. Here the figurine is the sitter's focus. Her quiet concentration makes the object a sign of taste and classical reference, in keeping with the cultivated interiors of the period. Alice Pike Barney, born in Cincinnati in 1857, was a painter and a prominent figure in Washington, D.C. cultural life, and this work reflects her early 1920s preference for soft surfaces and restrained poses.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

The composition is vertical, so the figure sits centred across the chest with the rose and the gold figurine landing at the wearer's heart. Up close, the streaked grey ground and the loose pastel marks read as an artist's hand, and from a distance the dark gown and gilt statuette hold the eye. Wearing it puts a quiet, classical portrait into everyday dress.
