Alice Pike Barney, born Cincinnati, OH - Zingare - ca. 1900 - T-Shirt

A dark-haired woman turns her strict profile to the left, drawn in soft pastel against a pale blue-grey ground.

Visual Elements & Composition

The figure fills a vertical field, with the head and shoulders set high and the eye led along one clean contour from brow to chin. The face is modelled in pinks and creams, with the lips and nostril picked out in a few precise strokes. The dark hair, pulled back into a low knot, gives the sheet its strongest mass. A pin or comb catches the light at the crown, and a single gold hoop hangs below the ear. Those two touches of gold are the only ornament in the composition. The shoulders dissolve into warm taupe paper, while a band of pale blue and grey opens the space behind the head.

Meaning & Symbolism

The Italian title, Zingare, means gypsy women. In nineteenth-century European painting the term described subjects of Romani or itinerant appearance, and studies like this one used a strong, unfamiliar profile, dark hair and jewellery to suggest an exotic character rather than a named sitter. Alice Pike Barney, born in Cincinnati in 1857 and active until 1931, worked mainly in pastel. This sheet, dated ca. 1900, comes from the years when she was building the soft, layered handling for which her portraits and figure studies are known. The restrained palette and firm contour show that handling at work, with the emphasis placed on line and the contrast of dark hair against light ground.

Wearing the Profile

A profile is a design that works best when it is seen from the side, and on a tee it sits across the chest so the viewer reads it head-on while the wearer's own posture shapes how the face turns. The pale ground keeps the contour legible at a distance, and the gold accents become the points the eye returns to as someone moves through a room.
