Ando Hiroshige, Japanese, 1797–1858 - Great Wave at Satta Beach, Suruga, from the series The Thirty-Six Views of Fuji - 1858 v1 - T-Shirt

Hiroshige's 1858 woodblock print pits a churning sea at Satta Beach against the steady white cone of Mount Fuji, rising calm and unmoved beyond the water.

Visual Elements & Composition

A tall vertical panel gives the scene its height. Prussian blue dominates the lower half, cut through by large breaking waves whose white crests curl upward into an arching wave shape. The pale cream sky opens the upper field, with Mount Fuji held quietly in the distance. Small touches carry the detail: a windswept pine on the rocky headland, a sailboat on the bay, a flock of birds crossing the air. Muted teal and a small vermilion cartouche add accents, and the Japanese inscriptions read 冨士三十六景, 遠州灘 and 廣重画.

Meaning & Symbolism

Satta Pass was feared by Tokaido travelers for its cliffside path and relentless surf, so the wild sea here stands for the real hazards of Edo-period journeys between Edo and Kyoto. Set against Fuji, the sacred and enduring symbol of the Japanese landscape, the scene expresses the traditional idea of transience meeting stability. Hiroshige created it in 1858, the final year of his life, as part of his vertical series The Thirty-Six Views of Fuji. It also answers Katsushika Hokusai's celebrated wave imagery, which places this work within the ukiyo-e landscape tradition Hiroshige defined.

Wrapped Around the Shirt

The vertical composition suits a tee, where the wave arch rises from the hem and the crests break across the chest. Fuji sits high and small, so it reads as a quiet point above the surf rather than a distant backdrop. Each detail of the print, from the headland pine to the birds, stays legible at close range, the way it would be seen in a woodblock impression held in the hand.
