Meaning & Symbolism

Kuwana sat on the Tokaido, the highway linking Edo and Kyoto, and its river crossing was one of the points where travelers had to switch from road to water. The print captures that transition: merchants, pilgrims and officials moving through the same crossing, depending on boats to get between provinces. Hiroshige made it around 1834, during the Edo period, as part of The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido, the series that established him as the leading landscape printmaker of his time and later influenced Western modern artists.
