Ando Hiroshige, Japanese, 1797–1858 - Nihonbashi from the series 53 Stations of Tokaido - 1855 - T-Shirt

This is a woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige showing the early morning departure from Nihonbashi in Edo, the official starting point of the Tokaido road.

Visual Elements & Composition

The scene is crowded and busy. Travelers, porters, and officials gather at the bridge as they prepare to leave, and their figures fill the foreground and middle ground. The print is built on the rhythm of these people moving in different directions, with the bridge and its surroundings giving the composition its structure. Colored inks sit on paper in the traditional ukiyo-e manner, with the restrained palette typical of Hiroshige's landscape work.

Meaning & Symbolism

Nihonbashi served as the zero-mile marker for all major highways in Japan, which makes the bridge a threshold between the ordered urban world of the shogunate and the unpredictable journey into the provinces. The mix of social classes gathered there points to the Tokaido's role as the main route for commerce, communication, and cultural exchange during the Edo period. Hiroshige created this print as the introductory plate of the Hoeido edition of the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido, first published in the early 1830s, a series that remains his most celebrated work.

Wearing the Journey

A shirt carries a print across the chest and back in a way a wall piece never does, so the departure scene moves with the person wearing it. The tee's crew neckline keeps the composition clean at the collar, letting the bridge and travelers read as a single image. Wear it when you are heading out, the way the figures in the print are.
