Auguste Claude Simon Legrand, French, - Louis XVII - n.d. - T-Shirt

This is a historic stipple engraving of Louis XVII of France, rendered in fine tonal detail by French printmaker Auguste Claude Simon Legrand.

Visual Elements & Composition

The portrait is built entirely from tone rather than line, with the young prince's face emerging from a field of dense dots that thicken in the shadows and thin toward the highlights. The effect is quiet and controlled. The composition centres on the head and shoulders, leaving the eye to settle on the features and the expression, which reads as serious and withdrawn. The palette is monochrome, and the image carries no decorative border or added text beyond the sitter's name and the date of the print.

Meaning & Symbolism

Louis XVII was born Louis-Charles, Duke of Normandy, and became the titular King of France when his father, Louis XVI, was executed during the French Revolution. He was never crowned. After the monarchy was abolished he was held in the Temple fortress in Paris, where he died of illness at the age of ten in 1795. Portraits of the young prince became a powerful emblem of innocence, royal loss and the human cost of revolutionary upheaval, especially for royalist sympathisers. Legrand worked in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, when printed portraits were a principal way of circulating images of royalty and political events.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A portrait engraving suits a tee because the image is read at close range, as the wearer moves and the shirt shows the face in full. Its tonal dots and restrained palette give the design a clear, sober presence on the chest. Wearing it carries the subject's story with you, a small piece of 1790s French memory set into everyday dress.
