Benoit Audran I, French, born Lyon, - L' Accouchement de la Reine - unknown - T-Shirt

This is an early eighteenth-century engraving by Benoit Audran I, reproducing a scene of the birth of the future Louis XIII to Queen Marie de' Medici.

Visual Elements & Composition

The composition is built around the Queen at the centre of the scene, surrounded by attendants and allegorical figures who fill the space with a controlled, theatrical arrangement. Rendered in fine black linework on a pale ground, the print gives every figure, drape and architectural detail the crisp definition that engraving is known for. The Queen's figure is the clear focal point, with the attendants arranged around her to direct the eye inward toward the moment of delivery.

Meaning & Symbolism

The scene was made for the series of prints reproducing the paintings commissioned for the Luxembourg Palace. It turns a private event into a public statement: the allegorical figures and mythological framing present the royal birth as a sign of divine favour, reinforcing the legitimacy of Marie de' Medici's reign and the continuity of the Bourbon line. Audran trained under his uncle Gérard Audran, and this print stands among the finest examples of French reproductive engraving from the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, when Baroque masterpieces were carried to a wide audience through prints.

Designed for the Chest

Engravings like this were built to be read closely, line by line, and this tee gives the image the same close, unhurried attention. Worn on the chest, the composition sits at the scale a viewer would hold a printed sheet, so the allegorical figures and attendants can be picked out as you move. The print reads as a single, self-contained scene, placed where it can be seen up close.
