Bureau of Engraving and Printing - 5c 150th Anniversary of Indiana Statehood plate proof - December 20, 1965 - Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee Design

This is a 1965 plate proof from the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, marking the 150th anniversary of Indiana's statehood with a 5-cent commemorative design.

Visual Elements & Composition

The proof is built around its denomination, the 5c numeral, which anchors the composition as the primary text. The palette follows the ink tones of the printing process, with brown, violet-blue and ocher shades carrying the design. Its formal layout reflects the disciplined framing of mid-century security printing, with the inscription and central image arranged for precise reproduction rather than decoration.

Meaning & Symbolism

The design commemorates Indiana's entry into the Union in 1816, the year the territory was admitted under the Enabling Act and became the 19th state. Issuing a federal commemorative for the sesquicentennial recognized Indiana's place in the national identity of the nineteenth century. Because it is a proof, the piece also records the production stages used to finalize government-issued commemoratives in the 1960s, linking routine bureaucratic work to the legislation that shaped the American Midwest.

Wearing the Design

Printed on a tee, this proof moves from the archive into everyday wear. The numerals and inscription stay legible across the chest, and the design's formal, historical character reads clearly at close range. Wearing it puts a piece of federal printing history and Indiana's statehood story in plain view.
