Carl Newman, born Philadelphia, PA - Reclining Female Nude, Back View - unknown - T-Shirt

A loose graphite sketch of a reclining female nude seen from behind, built from a few continuous strokes around a rounded hip and bent arm.

Visual Elements & Composition

Graphite grey and charcoal marks sit on cream paper, and the paper itself carries much of the image. The figure's back descends in a soft curve toward the lower left, while the head sits near the upper centre, its hair suggested by a dense cluster of short, overlapping strokes. The hip and thigh hold the heaviest shading, worked in directional hatching that turns the form, and an arm reaches toward the right edge. Light trailing lines to the left hint at the body's contour and the support beneath it.

Meaning & Symbolism

The drawing is a study of posture and mass rather than of an individual. The face is not described, so attention settles on the rhythm of the back and the weight of the body, and the diagonal sweep from shoulder to hip gives the pose its movement. Carl Newman, born in Philadelphia in 1858 and died in Abington, Pennsylvania in 1932, made the sheet in the early twentieth century, when rapid sketches capturing a pose in a few passages were a standard part of figurative practice. The work is held in the Smithsonian American Art Museum collection.

Seen From Behind

Because the figure faces away, the design reads across the back of the shirt, and the curve from shoulder to hip runs down the fabric as the wearer moves. The sketch's looseness suits a garment that is worn and seen in motion, with the shaded hip giving the composition a clear anchor at the centre of the panel.
