Carl Newman, born Philadelphia, PA - Three Women - unknown - T-Shirt

A brown ink wash sketch of three women in an interior, where a reclining nude, a bent figure and a clothed standing woman form a single settled group.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is built from sepia wash over off-white paper, with dark ink reserved for the heaviest contours. A diagonal runs from the reclining figure at upper right down to the bent figure at lower centre, and the standing woman at left closes the group beside a column. A vase sits on the ledge at the top of the scene, and the grey-brushed background lets the figures read clearly against it. The ink goes down in loose, broad strokes, and each figure is reduced to a few confident lines.

Meaning & Symbolism

The scene reads as domestic and studio-like rather than dramatic. One figure lies back, one bends to a task, and one watches, so the moment is one of rest and attention. Placing women within an interior, alongside architecture and objects like an urn, was a long-standing way for artists to treat the figure as part of everyday life. Carl Newman, an artist born in Philadelphia, catalogued this quick study as Three Women, and the sketch works out how bodies relate to one another within a single space.

Wearing the Study

Across the chest, the drawing keeps its diagonal and its open wash, so the three figures sit together as one arrangement. The clothed figure at left and the reclining nude at upper right give the front of the shirt its visual balance, with the bent figure anchoring the centre. The design rewards a closer look, since the handling of the ink shows the artist's hand as clearly as the subject.
