Carlo Maratti, Italian, born Camerano, - Supper at Emmaus - unknown - T-Shirt

A pen, ink and grey wash study of the Supper at Emmaus, with a seated figure breaking bread between two astonished companions.

Visual Elements & Composition

Charcoal and warm grey wash dominate the sheet, with pale ivory highlights and buff paper showing through. The paper itself is cut to a shaped, arched outline. Light falls on the central figure and the white tablecloth, so the bread becomes the focal point. Around the table, an arched niche recedes into shadow, a lamp hangs from the upper left, and an oval roundel is set into the wall. A satchel rests in the lower right foreground.

Meaning & Symbolism

The scene follows the Gospel of Luke, in which two disciples walking to Emmaus do not recognise the stranger who joins them until he blesses and breaks the bread at supper. Maratti places the moment of recognition in the gestures of the companions: one arm stretched across the cloth, one hand pressed to a chest. The satchel at the table's edge points back to the road that led to the meal. Carlo Maratti (1625-1713) was one of the leading painters in later seventeenth-century Rome, and studies like this one fixed the grouping of figures and strong directional light before he painted his altarpieces.

Built for the Chest and the Turn of a Shoulder

The arched sheet and the central figure sit naturally in the middle of a chest, so the bread-breaking moment is the first thing a viewer sees. The companions lean outward on either side, following the lines of the shoulders. Because the drawing is quiet and mostly grey, it reads clearly up close and across a room, and it suits anyone who wants a piece of Baroque narrative drawing to carry with them.
