Carlos Bini - An escutcheon, with a dedication - 1750–75 v1 - T-Shirt

A pen and grey wash drawing of a dedicatory escutcheon, built around an inscription that names a military governor and framed by weapons, scrolls and tassels.

Visual Elements & Composition

Cream paper, black ink and soft grey wash make up the whole sheet. A ruled rectangular border encloses the scene. At the centre sits a scrolled cartouche with a curving outline, its capitals setting out the dedication in lines that step down the field. Above it, a trophy of arms gathers a sword, a spear, a bundle of arrows, a banner and a small helmet-like form. Tasselled swags and fluted volutes flank the lettering, and curling foliate ornament builds up the lower edge.

Meaning & Symbolism

The inscription names Joaquín de Fonsdeviela as lieutenant general of the royal armies and military and political governor of Cádiz. The text fixes his rank and civic office, while the weapons signal the military command behind them. Dedicatory escutcheons like this one introduced a book, print or formal document, placing a dignitary's name inside an armorial framework that proclaimed his standing. The trophy carries the conventional message of victory and command, and the scrolls and tassels give the statement its ceremonial tone. The sheet is signed by Carlos Bini with the Latin note Rom. fecit, and it belongs to the eighteenth-century tradition of decorative draughtsmanship.

Worn at Conversation Distance

A dedicatory escutcheon was designed to be read at close range, and a tee carries that scale across the chest, where the cartouche sits level with the eye of anyone facing you. The ruled border becomes the edge of the print, and the trophy rises toward the shoulders as you move. Wearing it turns an eighteenth-century dedication into a statement made in person.
