Cecilia Beaux, 1 May 1855 - 17 Sep 1942 - Henry James - 1911 - T-Shirt

A charcoal portrait of the novelist Henry James, drawn head and shoulders on warm tan paper, with his gaze fixed directly on the viewer.

Visual Elements & Composition

Tan paper fills the frame, and the head and shoulders stand out against its bare ground. Charcoal does the rest: a high, bare crown, deep-set eyes, and heavier shadow along the right cheek and jaw. The sitter turns slightly toward the viewer. A dark tie is worked in dense hatching at the throat, while the jacket and collar are suggested with a few loose contour lines that fade before reaching the bottom of the chest. A line of cursive inscription sits in the lower left corner.

Meaning & Symbolism

James was the American-born novelist and critic who settled in England and wrote The Portrait of a Lady and The Ambassadors. A portrait of a writer of his standing recorded intellect and public presence rather than rank or wealth, and the economy of the drawing serves that purpose. The empty background and concentrated attention on the face bring out the watchful, reflective character his fiction often explored. Cecilia Beaux, the American painter known chiefly for portraits, drew this in 1911, within the period of her mature practice. The drawing is held in the National Portrait Gallery collection at the Smithsonian.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A portrait on a shirt is seen first from across the room and then up close as the wearer moves. The face sits at the centre of the chest, so the eyes and the dark tie meet anyone who turns toward you. The bare tan field around the head lets the drawing read as a single figure, and the composition keeps the wearer's own presence in the foreground.
