Charles Nicolas Ransonnette, French, - Landscape - 1830–1850 - T-Shirt

This pen and ink park scene shows a cultivated garden in the nineteenth century, with a broad umbrella pine, a seated group by a still pool, and a statue rising beside the water.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing is built from black ink on cream paper, with a fine ruled border framing the whole sheet. A broad, umbrella-shaped pine fills the right side, its crown built from quick hatched strokes. A smaller pine and a row of trees recede toward a distant building and palisade. On the left, a standing figure rests beside a leafy tree, while a seated group of women sits on the grassy bank above the water. A pale statue on a tall pedestal rises at centre right. The foreground is shaded with horizontal strokes that show the stillness of the pool, and the open sky stays pale and empty. The sheet carries the inscription "marilhat. inv."

Meaning & Symbolism

The garden setting, the statue and the architecture among the trees all signal designed, leisured landscape rather than wild woodland. Park views of this kind carried associations with polite leisure, conversation and the enjoyment of carefully arranged nature. The figures sit close to the viewer, and their gaze and posture draw the eye outward across the water to the distant trees. The crisp, economical penwork belongs to the finished landscape drawings made for collectors and albums in the early and mid nineteenth century, and the drawing is held in a museum collection.

Made for the Wearer

A landscape this wide reads best across the chest, where the ruled border becomes a framed panel and the pine sits off to one side as it does on the sheet. The calm pool and pale sky give the front of the shirt a quiet, unhurried presence, and the seated figures stay near the centre of the wearer's body, close to the eye as they are on paper.
