Christoph Voll, German, born Munich, - Cats - ca. 1930-1938 - T-Shirt

A pencil study sheet of two cats, one seated and alert, one curled asleep, drawn in soft graphite on cream paper.

Visual Elements & Composition

The parchment-toned paper fills nearly the whole sheet, and the grey graphite lines sit lightly on it. At the left, an upright cat holds a compact pose, its head turned toward the viewer and its ears laid back. Short, loose strokes and light shading describe its back and haunches. At the lower right, a second cat lies curled with its head tucked into its body and its tail wrapped around. A few continuous contours and sparing shadow carry the whole form. A partial sketch at the upper right edge is cut off by the frame, and a handwritten pencil inscription runs along the lower left beneath the seated animal.

Meaning & Symbolism

The pairing sets a waking animal beside a sleeping one, so the sheet reads as a record of rest and attention in the same moment. Studies like this were drawn from life, either as preparation for larger compositions or as exercises in capturing gesture and the weight of a body in a few lines. Domestic cats were a frequent subject in German and European drawing of the 1930s, where small everyday animals gave artists room to practise line and character. Christoph Voll, a German artist born in Munich, is recorded in the Smithsonian American Art Museum collection under this sheet, dated to about 1930 to 1938.

Wearing the Study

Working drawings like this one are the most direct trace of an artist's hand, and the front of this tee gives the sketch room to be read the way it was made, with the sleeping cat and the alert cat laid out across the chest. The inscription and loose margins keep the sheet's feel of a notebook page rather than a finished picture, which suits a shirt meant for everyday wear.
