Coat of Arms of Puebla (Mexico) Hoodie - Design Description

This hoodie features a detailed representation of the Coat of Arms of Puebla, a symbol rich in history and meaning. The design centers around a shield divided into four quadrants, each telling a story about the state's identity.

The Shield's Elements

At the heart of the design is a smaller, central shield bearing the inscription "5 de mayo de 1862," commemorating the pivotal Battle of Puebla. Encircling this central element is a white border with the motto: "Unidos en el tiempo, en el esfuerzo, en la justicia y en la esperanza" ("United in time, in effort, in justice and in hope"). Above the shield, silhouettes of the iconic Puebla mountains – Citlaltépetl (Pico de Orizaba), Popocatépetl, Iztaccíhuatl, and Matlacuéitl (La Malinche) – are displayed.

Symbolism in the Quarters

Each of the four quarters of the main shield is filled with distinct imagery:

  • Top-left: An industrial factory, representing Puebla's historical manufacturing industry.
  • Top-right: The old dam at Necaxa, representing Puebla's role in electricity generation and modernization.
  • Bottom-left: A raised arm holding a rifle over flames, symbolizing revolutionary struggles.
  • Bottom-right: A hand with a maize plant (milpa), representing agriculture.

Mythological and Cultural Elements

Flanking the shield are two feathered serpents, or Quetzalcóatl, with corn-cob tails, marked with human footprints and holding four suns. Atop the mountains, they hold a mask of Tláloc, the ancient deity associated with rain and fertility. These elements link to indigenous symbolism of cycles, history, continuity and human journey, ancestral mythology, and sustenance. Finally, at the bottom, a ribbon displays the legend: "Estado Libre y Soberano de Puebla," representing the state's political identity.

The entire design represents a collective identity, natural environment and regional identity, encompassing history, economy, geography, and cultural identity of the State of Puebla.
