Daniel Huntington, American, 1816–1906 - A Cliff at Stowe - September 1864 - T-Shirt

A graphite pencil study of a rugged rock face and jagged peaks, drawn in September 1864 by American artist Daniel Huntington.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing is built from a cream ground, roughly three-fifths of the sheet, with graphite grey and charcoal shading carrying the forms. An irregular mountain silhouette rises across the upper field, and a vertical cliff face runs down the centre, its crevices and ledges picked out in close, layered strokes. The rock dominates the composition, with the sky left open and quiet around it. The only lettering is a small inscription reading "Stone" and "Sept 64," tucked into the margin like a field note.

Meaning & Symbolism

Huntington was known mainly for portraits and history paintings, but this sheet shows his close attention to natural observation. Made in Vermont during the Civil War, it records the physical terrain of the Stowe region at a time when the country was deeply divided. Landscape studies like this one offered a steady, enduring image of the American land, and the cliff stands as a fixed point of national identity and geographic permanence.

Reading the Cliff on a Tee

A cliff face is a tall, vertical subject, and this design gives it room to rise across the front of the shirt. The ledges and crevices sit at chest height, so the drawing reads clearly when you look down at it, and the open cream ground keeps the rock feeling as quiet and contemplative as the original sheet.
