Felice Giani, Italian, 1758–1823 - Decorative Project for Ceiling- Tondo with Triumph of Cerus - unknown - T-Shirt

A cross-shaped ceiling project sheet by Felice Giani, drawn in brown ink, places a triumphal procession at its centre and frames the seasons around it.

Visual Elements & Composition

The parchment-toned ground fills most of the sheet, and the sepia ink lines dominate everything laid over it. A large circular tondo sits at the centre, crowded with a seated female figure, putti, animals and clouds. Around it, octagonal side panels and rectangular framed panels hold paired figures, winged putti and a chariot drawn by horses. A light brown wash softens the figures, while each panel outline is drawn with a firm, even stroke. Short handwritten Italian labels mark the scheme: primavera at the top, autunno beneath the tondo, and inverno among the surrounding panels.

Meaning & Symbolism

The central subject is a triumph, a procession of abundance and celebration tied in antiquity to Cerus, the goddess of the harvest. The seasonal labels turn the ceiling into a cycle, moving from spring to autumn and gathering the whole year into one composition. Allegories of time and fertility were a favoured theme for decorative ceilings, where they expressed prosperity and order in domestic and civic rooms. Giani (1758 to 1823) was a painter and decorator active in Rome, whose interiors joined classical mythology with ornamental framing. This sheet is the preparatory stage of such a scheme, where the central subject and surrounding panels were arranged before execution.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A ceiling is seen from below, but a tee brings the design to eye level and across the chest. The tondo becomes the focal point at the centre of the wearer's torso, with the framed panels reading as a deliberate cross around it. Up close, the seasonal labels and the fine ink lines are where the drawing rewards a second look.
