Visual Elements & Composition

Giani drew these studies to test how antiquity-derived motifs could organise a room. The candelabrum and the ceiling belong together: one is an object of light, the other a structure that frames it. Their order and symmetry express the neoclassical belief that architecture and decorative arts should answer to the same principles. Giani worked at the turn of the nineteenth century, bridging late Baroque habits and the stricter discipline of Neoclassicism, and he was central to the interiors of European elite households of his time.
