Felice Giani, Italian, 1758–1823 - Drawing - 1835-1850 - T-Shirt

This pen and grey wash drawing shows a tall funerary monument rising from a stepped base, with a covered urn crowning its top.

Visual Elements & Composition

The monument is built in stacked tiers. A pediment with lion-head brackets at each end and a band of dentil moulding sits beneath the urn, and two fluted columns with Corinthian capitals frame a central niche. Inside the niche, a relief shows two seated figures leaning toward each other on either side of a vase. Below, a wreath encloses crossed implements above a broad inscription panel, and tall torch stands with flame-like forms flank the whole structure. Grey wash shading gives the stone its weight against the cream paper, and the numeral 51 appears on the lower block.

Meaning & Symbolism

The urn, torches and embracing figures are the vocabulary of classical tombs, signalling mourning and the honouring of the dead. The two figures around a vase suggest shared grief or a farewell, a theme common in memorial sculpture of the period. The sheet is catalogued under Felice Giani, the Italian painter and decorator known for Neoclassical interiors and ornament in Rome, with a date range of 1835 to 1850. It belongs to the nineteenth-century Neoclassical tradition, in which the language of antique tombs was adapted for memorials.

Designed for the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A monument is built to be read from the front and from below, and this design keeps that frontal view. Its urn sits near the collar, the columns run down the centre of the chest, and the inscription block settles at the lower body, so the whole structure reads top to bottom as you move. The crew neckline frames the urn as a finial, and the relaxed silhouette lets the tall form stand clear of the body. Wear it as you would a quiet, formal piece: the monument speaks for itself.
