This is a working sketchbook page, filled with small pen-and-ink studies that Felice Giani made as he copied paintings he saw across Italy between 1811 and 1814.

Visual Elements & Composition

The page is built from separate, loosely arranged studies rather than one unified scene. Each fragment isolates a figure, a gesture, or a motif lifted from a larger painting, drawn in brown ink and brown wash over faint graphite traces on cream laid paper. Meaning & Symbolism

The sketches record the academic method of learning by copying the masters. Giani drew from paintings in Ferrara, Rome, Bologna, and Mantua, the cities that held the Renaissance and Baroque heritage he was studying.
