Francesco Bedeschini, Italian - One of a set of projects for a title page and the decoration of a horizontal - 1675-1699 - T-Shirt

Two plump putti tumble through scrolling acanthus in this brown ink and wash ornament study, drawn in the late seventeenth century.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is a rectangular panel enclosed by a double ruled border, rendered in sepia brown and dark brown ink on cream paper. One putto sits at upper left, reaching toward a stylised bloom, while the other stands at lower right among foliage beside a large open flower. Acanthus-like leaves and volutes fill the spaces between them, and fine horizontal hatching shades the background. The figures and vegetation are balanced across a diagonal, so neither dominates the field.

Meaning & Symbolism

Putti, foliage and flowers were the working vocabulary of decorative ornament, used for borders, cartouches and the framing of a title page. The lively, organic style reflects the Baroque taste for figures and vegetation that seem to grow out of one another. The cheerful children suggest abundance and renewal, themes common in celebratory decoration of the period. Francesco Bedeschini, an Italian draughtsman, made this study as part of a set for a title page and a horizontal field, and it belongs to the Italian tradition of ornament drawing that fed architectural and decorative workshops. Designs like this gave craftsmen in stucco, woodcarving and engraving a model for ordering and filling a decorative field.

Made for Close Viewing

A tee is worn at close range and seen from every angle as it moves, so the drawing’s balance of figure and foliage reads as the wearer moves. The panel’s double border frames the chest much as it framed a page, and the hatched background gives the print the texture of a hand-drawn sheet. The playful putti bring the sheet’s sense of abundance to everyday wear.
