Francis Augustus Lathrop, (American, - Drawing - before 1914 - T-Shirt

This is a horizontal decorative frieze, painted in watercolour and gouache, in which interlaced foliate scrolls frame a small figural scene at the centre.

Visual Elements & Composition

A pale cream ground carries the whole design, with ochre gold dominating the scrollwork and sage green filling the leaves. Muted blue and a touch of dusty rose appear in the flowers and panels. A long band of interlaced scrolls runs across the sheet and encloses three principal panels: an octagonal cartouche at the centre, a rectangular tablet with a block of lettering at the left, and a circular medallion at the right showing a vase of flowers. Narrow bands of stylised ornament border the top and bottom edges, giving the piece a measured, continuous rhythm.

Meaning & Symbolism

The central cartouche holds the narrative focus of the frieze: a seated figure in a draped garment, attended by standing robed companions beneath a bank of trees. The floral medallion and the lettered tablet offer contrasting forms of ornament, one natural and one textual. The balance of pictorial scene and pure pattern reflects the late nineteenth-century practice of combining figurative painting with ornament and inscription in interior schemes. Francis Augustus Lathrop worked as a painter and decorative artist in the American decorative arts movement, and this sheet is one of his design drawings for ornamental work, dated before 1914.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A frieze is built to run across a surface in a single band, and that is how this design sits on the tee: the scrollwork stretches across the front, while the octagonal cartouche anchors the centre of the chest. The figural scene reads at close range, so the viewer sees the seated figure and the trees up close, with the floral medallion and text tablet on either side. Every element of Lathrop's sheet stays in view as one composed unit.
