This is a pencil study of three separate subjects from the Ecuadorian port of Guayaquil, drawn on the spot by Frederic Edwin Church in May 1857.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is pale cream paper, with graphite lines doing all the work. There is no shading or tonal modelling, so every form is defined by outline alone. On the left, a single bending trunk fans into loose, feathery clusters of foliage. In the upper right, a grove of broad, strap-like plantain leaves rises from a dark base, labelled in pencil as "Groves of Plantains." Lower right, a small dwelling with a steep roof and an open lower storey sits on the ground. The three groups stay apart, which gives the page the feel of a set of reference notes rather than one unified view.

Meaning & Symbolism

The drawing records a working method. Church annotated each motif in a slanting hand, so the sketches and their words function together as a memorandum for later use. The plants were unfamiliar to a northern visitor, and the modest hut shows the ordinary built environment of the place. Church was known for Hudson River School landscapes before turning to the tropical and Andean scenery of his South American journeys, and this sheet belongs to that period of close, documentary looking.
