Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Albornoz Fortress, Narni, Italy - October 1, 1868 v1 - T-Shirt

This design is a pencil study of hilltop strongholds, drawn by Frederic Edwin Church in Narni in October 1868.

Visual Elements & Composition

Three separate studies are stacked down the page on pale, unshaded paper. At the top, a rocky hill rises to a summit crowned by a small fortified structure, its slopes sketched in loose, sweeping strokes. The middle study shows a distant castle with two squared towers sitting low on a flat rise. At the bottom, a dense tree mass overhangs a low arched structure. The walls are drawn in firm contours, while the surrounding land dissolves into soft, indistinct planes. Handwritten notes in the margins give a date and a place name, and they are part of the composition as much as the drawings.

Meaning & Symbolism

Fortified towns on high ground were a natural subject for an artist travelling through the Umbrian hills, where such sites recorded the long history of papal power in the region. The notes show that Church worked from direct observation, logging the time and place so the studies could be used later in finished compositions. His Italian travels of the late 1860s produced a large body of sketches like this one, linking first-hand looking to the polished landscapes he painted after returning home.

Wearing the Sketchbook Page

A pencil study was made to be held close and read slowly, and a tee puts it at chest height, where the eye lands first and then moves down through the three stacked scenes. The hill, castle and tree sit one above the other, so the layout follows the shape of the shirt front. The handwritten notes read the way Church meant them: as a record of a particular day in a particular place.
