Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Architecture Sketches and Woman Carrying Basket, Switzerland - August 1868 v2 - T-Shirt

This is a graphite landscape study by Frederic Edwin Church, drawn on blue-grey paper during his travels in Switzerland in August 1868.

Visual Elements & Composition

The blue-grey paper fills most of the sheet, and the pencil work sits on it in a restrained palette of greys. A range of jagged peaks rises across the upper centre, their summits broken into sharp points. Short, parallel strokes shade the faces of rock and snow, while hatched lines describe the slopes below. A long diagonal ridge sweeps from upper left toward lower centre and divides the composition into planes. At lower left, a small cluster of buildings or rock outcrops sits on a ledge. A handwritten note at upper right gives a location near a hotel and a date, and a catalogue number is marked in the corner.

Meaning & Symbolism

The sheet is a record made on the spot, where Church was studying the structure of the ridges and the way light and shadow fall across them. The handwritten note served to identify the view, so the drawing could be matched to its place and time later. The small building gives scale to the immense forms above it. Studies like this one document the observation behind the finished canvases for which Church, a Hudson River School painter, is known.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

The wide landscape rectangle of the sheet suits the front of a tee, where the diagonal ridge can run across the chest and the peaks rise toward the collar. The handwritten note at upper right gives the print a small point of detail to find on close viewing, much as the sketch rewards a look at its margins. Worn close to the body, the drawing keeps the quiet, austere mood of the original paper.
