What the Drawing Shows

The sheet is worked in graphite on gray laid paper, so the drawing relies on tone and line rather than color. Birds and branches are set close together, and the foliage fills much of the sheet, with the trees rising and crossing one another. The hand is direct and observational: edges are sharp where Church wanted detail, and the surrounding paper is left to hold the composition together.

Origins and Meaning

Church made studies like this while travelling through South America, recording species he had not seen before. Nineteenth-century natural history treated nature as an interconnected system, and this sheet reflects that view by pairing animal and plant life on one page. These drawings also served as preparation for the large studio paintings Church later made of the New World tropics. He was a leading figure of the Hudson River School, and this kind of plein-air sketching shaped his broader approach to landscape.
