This is a faint graphite study of a palm, drawn by Frederic Edwin Church during his travels in Ecuador in 1857, with its fronds arching outward from a single crown.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is cream paper, with the drawing kept in soft grey pencil. The largest frond sweeps up the middle of the page, and smaller fronds fall away to either side, so the plant reads as one complete silhouette. The trunk base is only a few vertical strokes and a rough, shaggy texture, with no solid outline. A handwritten note at lower right, in the same pencil, comments on the colour of the stalks and records that the leaves are green.

Meaning & Symbolism

Church was a pupil of Thomas Cole and a leading figure of the Hudson River School. On his South American journeys he filled sketchbooks with tropical vegetation, and palms recur throughout that material.
