Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Botanical Sketches, Ecuador - May–August 1857 v2 - T-Shirt

This is a graphite study sheet from Frederic Edwin Church's 1857 journey to Ecuador, showing a leafy sprig, a row of buds, and a tall banana cluster annotated in the artist's own hand.

Visual Elements & Composition

Cream paper fills nearly the entire sheet, with grey graphite drawn across it in loose, open outlines. Several specimens sit in rows: a branching sprig with long, pointed leaves in the upper left, a bloom with broad petals beside a cluster of rounded leaves, and a line of buds and small pods hanging from thin stalks below. The largest figure is the banana cluster on the right, a compact fruit group on a long, segmented stalk that ends in a small bud. Handwritten labels identify the white flower, mark one bud as red, and name the bananas, with an extra note in the upper right.

Meaning & Symbolism

The sheet works as a field record. Each specimen is drawn for its colour and structure rather than arranged into a finished scene, and the written notes make the page a catalogue of observations. Church, a leading Hudson River School painter, filled sketchbooks like this on his South American travels in 1857. Pages such as this one gave him precise botanical reference that he later drew on when building his larger studio paintings.

Wearing the Study

A print on a tee sits across the chest, so the labels and fine contour lines read most clearly at close range, as they would on a page held in the hand. The banana cluster falls on the right side of the shirt, where the sheet's strongest figure already sits. Each annotated specimen stays legible as a detail when the wearer moves through the day.
