Church recorded this flora as scientific evidence and as artistic study at once. In the nineteenth century, travel to Central and South America was central to American landscape painting, a direction encouraged by Alexander von Humboldt, who urged artists to go to the tropics and document the variety of nature. For Church, these plants pointed to the interconnected order of the natural world. The studies also fed the larger canvases he later made for American audiences, and he was a leading figure of the Hudson River School.
