Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Buildings on a Riverbank, Ecuador - 1857 v4 - T-Shirt

This is a pencil page from Frederic Edwin Church's 1857 Ecuador sketchbook, showing tropical foliage, a bamboo cluster and a dugout canoe carrying two figures.

Visual Elements & Composition

Graphite lines dominate the sheet, set on warm cream paper. A broad, rounded canopy fills the upper left, a tree sits at the left edge, and a lower shrub spreads across the centre. On the right, blossoming plants sit beside a fern-like frond and a stand of bamboo. Each mass of leaves is traced in loose, broken strokes, and each motif is placed apart so it can be compared with the others. Handwritten notes below the foliage record colours and textures: deep salmon flowers, dull grey-green leaves and yellow blossoms with feathery foliage.

Meaning & Symbolism

Church (1826–1900) was a leading member of the Hudson River School. In 1857 he travelled to Ecuador to study the Andes and the lowland plants around them, and this sheet records that work. The annotations fix the colour and surface qualities a pencil cannot carry, so the page served as a reference for larger finished canvases. The canoe, with its two paddlers, introduces human activity on the waterway and gives the riverbank growth its scale.

On This Tee

The study is built from separate, labelled parts, and a shirt front suits that kind of layout. The artwork sits as a single field of line and notation, so the eye moves from the canopy to the canoe and back, much as it would across a field notebook. Wearing it puts a working scientific page of 1857 in the everyday, with the canoe and its figures at the centre of the view.
