Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Canyon Cleft near El Khasné, Petra, Jordan - February 25-27, 1868 v1 - T-Shirt

A narrow cleft of towering rock opens toward the carved facade of the Treasury at Petra, rendered in graphite pencil on pale parchment.

Visual Elements & Composition

Parchment beige fills nearly the entire sheet, with graphite grey reserved for the rock outlines and shadowed cliff faces. The composition is built on a vertical passage: rock walls rise on either side and pull the eye toward the light at the far end. Carved architecture sits at the centre, its horizontal bands of stone cut into the cliff and drawn with careful pencil hatching. Handwritten annotations along the margins are part of the sketch's character, though they are not legible.

Meaning & Symbolism

Frederic Edwin Church recorded this scene during his travels through the Middle East between late 1867 and early 1868. A leading Hudson River School painter, he approached Petra as a site of enduring antiquity, where ancient civilisations met the monumental forms of the natural world. For Church and his American contemporaries, such places carried biblical and romantic weight, and this drawing turns a travel record into a study of the sublime, where scale and stone overwhelm the viewer.

Carried Across the Chest

A tee is worn close to the body, so the cleft's vertical rise follows the line of the torso and the carved facade sits where the wearer can see it in profile. The design reads as a landscape you move through, with the rock walls framing the figure. Its pale ground and fine grey linework give it the quiet presence of a sketchbook page.
