Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Canyon in the El Yemen Valley, Palestine (Israel) - February 20, 1868 v2 - T-Shirt

This graphite study records the rugged rock formations of the El Yemen Valley in Palestine, drawn on site by Frederic Edwin Church on February 20, 1868.

Visual Elements & Composition

Parchment tan covers most of the sheet, with graphite grey carrying the cliffs, mesa outlines and scattered boulders, and white highlights lifting the sunlit faces of the rock. The layout is a wide horizontal sheet. Stepped cliffs rise across the middle, a rock-cut architectural face is set into the cliff wall, and a sandy foreground with loose stones opens along the bottom edge. Small inscriptions appear across the paper, marking the drawing as a working record.

Meaning & Symbolism

Church travelled through Europe and the Middle East between 1867 and 1868, and studies like this one documented the physical settings of biblical history for American audiences. The cliffs and arid ground stand for the Holy Land as a place of religious, historical and scientific interest in the nineteenth century. As a preparatory sketch, it supplied the geographic detail Church later carried into his large studio landscapes, the work that made him a leading figure of the American Hudson River School.

Reading the Design on a Tee

A tee carries this sketch across the chest, where the horizontal composition reads as a single landscape and the pale ground keeps the rock detail clear at a glance. When worn, the cliffs and foreground move with the body, so the study is seen up close, much as a field sketch is held in the hand. The restrained, observational mood suits a plain tee, letting the drawing's fine graphite lines do the work.
