Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Carved Inscriptions - 1868 v1 - T-Shirt

This graphite study by Frederic Edwin Church records a group of carved inscriptions as framed blocks of capital letters, drawn with the care of a document rather than a landscape.

Visual Elements & Composition

Pale grey-cream dominates the sheet, with faint pencil grey carrying every line. The lettering sits in rectangular cartouches and scroll-edged panels, stacked in irregular rows across the page. Widely spaced characters are separated by small marks, and rough outlines describe the stone around each group. A numeral appears at upper left, and a shaped label at upper right carries a single-letter abbreviation. Shading is minimal, so the firm contours and the grouping of the letters do the work.

Meaning & Symbolism

The subject is the inscribed surface itself. By copying each letter and its placement, Church preserves the form of the carving, which weathering or the difficulty of recording on site could otherwise erase. The sheet treats writing in stone as an object of visual study, where the shape of each character and the arrangement of the blocks form the record. Church travelled in the Near East in 1867 and 1868, and drawings of monuments and their inscriptions were part of what he brought home. This sheet, dated 1868 by its title, belongs to that body of travel studies, which complemented his larger oil paintings of landscapes and historic places.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A tee carries its design at conversation distance, so the stacked blocks of lettering read across the chest as a single arrangement, the way Church arranged them across the page. The measured, documentary character of the drawing suits a garment worn every day, where the inscriptions stay in view as the wearer moves through the day.
