Visual Elements & Composition

Pale graphite lines on cream paper carry the whole image. A large rounded dome with a lantern and cross rises at the centre, set on a plain drum above a flat-roofed block. To the right, an ornate bell tower with arched openings and a small finial stands beside a smaller dome, and a long tiled roof runs across the right half of the sheet above a row of small windows. The cream ground dominates, with the drawing kept light and open around the building.

Meaning & Symbolism

The layered domes, towers and long roof record the richly decorated religious architecture Church encountered in Mexico. The standing figure at far left, in a long robe with a rounded head and hat or hood, gives the building its human scale. Placing one person beside a monumental structure is a device common to travel studies, where the size of the building is measured against the people passing beneath it. Frederic Edwin Church (1826–1900) was a leading member of the Hudson River School and one of the most celebrated American landscape painters of his generation. His journeys to Mexico and Latin America supplied material for several finished canvases, and sketches like this one served as their source studies.
