This is a graphite field study of Catskill Creek in New York, drawn by Frederic Edwin Church in August 1844, when he was still a young artist.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing is rendered entirely in graphite on white paper, so tone does the work that colour would otherwise do. Soft grey shading describes the water, the banks, and the ground rising around the creek.
