Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Chimborazo and El Altar from Riobamba, Ecuador - July 13, 1857 v2 - T-Shirt

This 1857 drawing by Frederic Edwin Church shows the Andean volcanoes Chimborazo and El Altar as seen from the high plain of Riobamba, Ecuador.

Visual Elements & Composition

The work is rendered in graphite on tan wove paper, so its tones run from pale warm ground to deep grey shadow. The peaks rise across the sheet as the dominant mass, with the broad plain below giving them scale. Church builds the view with careful tonal transitions, letting the summits hold the eye while the atmosphere softens the distance.

Meaning & Symbolism

Church made this drawing during an exploratory journey through South America in the mid-nineteenth century. For the period, the Andes embodied the Humboldtian idea that nature is a single living whole, linking geology, botany and climate. The volcanoes stand for that unified study of the natural world, as well as the era's fascination with wilderness and the sublime. Church was a central figure of the Hudson River School, and this sheet shows how he carried that vision of vast landscape into the tropics and the Andes.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A drawing of this scale suits a shirt, where the full sweep of the range can be seen at once. The composition is built around open distance rather than close detail, so it reads clearly across the front of a tee and stays legible as the wearer moves. Worn on a daily basis, it carries a piece of nineteenth-century exploration from the Smithsonian's Cooper Hewitt collection.
