This is a pencil study of cumulus cloud on sage-toned paper, with handwritten colour notes running around the drawing.

Visual Elements & Composition

A cluster of cloud fills the left and centre of the sheet, built from scalloped outlines and soft graphite shading. Paler passages sit inside the cloud mass and fade into the paper. Faint horizontal streaks cross the upper area above a low horizon, and a smaller cloud at the upper right is numbered 2. Along the lower left, a column of pencilled lines records further tones, with words such as "blue," "dark greyish blue," "brilliant gold white" and "smoke orange tinted." The word "Cirri" appears near the top.

Meaning & Symbolism

The sketch pairs drawn form with written colour, so the shape of the clouds and the exact tone of the light are recorded together. The reference to cirrus sits beside the heavier cumulus, and the contrast between cool blues and warm gold shows a sky lit in layers. Frederic Edwin Church, identified with the Hudson River School, made many outdoor studies like this across the middle decades of the nineteenth century. Sheets of this kind gave him the observations he later developed into his finished atmospheric landscapes.
