Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Cloud Sketch - July 1845 v1 - T-Shirt

This is a pencil study of a cloud, drawn by Frederic Edwin Church in July 1845, with a written note on how its light and shadow should be painted.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing sits on cream paper and is built from faint graphite lines. Ragged, scalloped outlines gather into a loose cluster near the centre and trail off to the right in a thinner, wavering band. Short, broken strokes trace the edges, while denser hatching fills the lower part of the mass. Small numerals 2 and 3 mark particular passages, and most of the sheet is left open. Across the top runs a handwritten note: lights yellow and bright, shadows orange and wonderfully transparent, with dark, ragged & irregular forms.

Meaning & Symbolism

The sketch works out a principle of observation. Sunlit areas are to be warm and bright, and shadowed areas transparent and tinted orange rather than grey. Church treated the cloud as a problem of colour as well as form. Numbering the passages and recording colour in words was a way of preparing a study that could be reconstructed in paint later. Church, the American painter associated with the Hudson River School, made many outdoor studies of clouds and sky in the 1840s, and this sheet reflects the close looking behind his atmospheric landscapes.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A tee is worn close to the body and seen from every side as the wearer moves, so the cloud's shifting edges and the handwritten note sit across the chest as a piece of working paper. The design reads best at close range, where the hatching and numerals come forward, much like the sketchbook it came from.
