Visual Elements & Composition

The sky fills the upper two-thirds of the sheet, left open and lightly worked. Along the lower centre, a hatched band of land runs from left to right and rounds up into a headland at the right, its edge broken by small irregular rocks. Numerals 2 through 6 mark passages across the land and sky, and a list of five colour notes sits in the upper right corner. The palette is restrained: warm grey paper and pencil grey, with the numbered notes carrying the colour decisions.

Meaning & Symbolism

The sheet records where land and light fall at a particular hour, and the tonal list is the key to a finished painting. Its subject is the move from an illuminated shore to a subdued sky, a quiet shift rather than a dramatic event. Church (1826-1900), a leading Hudson River School painter and pupil of Thomas Cole, built his large landscapes from outdoor sketches like this one. The dated study reflects the working method behind his atmospheric canvases of the late 1860s.
