Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Cloudy Sky - 1856–1890 v2 - T-Shirt

This is a faint graphite study of near-vertical strokes on a folded buff sheet, drawn by Frederic Edwin Church as a working note on the sky.

Visual Elements & Composition

Buff yellow fills nearly the whole sheet, with graphite grey appearing only in the pencil. Thin strokes rise from the lower left, some ending in a point and others trailing off. They gather into loose bands that overlap and cross. Short handwritten notes sit against the strokes and to their right, while the rest of the sheet stays open. A central fold line runs down the paper and divides the composition.

Meaning & Symbolism

Church (1826–1900) was a leading painter of the Hudson River School, and the sky and changing weather carry much of his work. Sketches like this one formed his preparatory practice, recording observation on paper before the studio painting began. The upright strokes set this sheet apart from the others in the group, which tend to run across the sky. They record a tall, narrow vertical effect that the artist wanted to remember. The brief notes show a sheet made to be returned to, not a finished drawing.

Wearing the Vertical Study

The strokes run top to bottom, which is the same direction a shirt is worn. Across the chest they carry the eye upward, so the drawing reads as it is meant to, as a tall column of sky observed closely. The fold line sits where the centre of a body falls, so the design follows the natural lines of the wearer.
