Visual Elements & Composition

Lower centre, a rounded cumulus shape rises from a faint horizontal base. Its shadowed side is packed with close diagonal strokes, while the lit edges stay light and break into irregular scallops. Small numerals sit around the cloud and along the bands, and short notes in the upper right label colours as warm or cool.

Meaning & Symbolism

The sheet is a working study rather than a finished view. The hatching records light and shadow in a few quick directions, and the numbered marks and written colour notes show Church tracking the hues of sky and cloud so they could be matched in a later painting. The contrast between warm and cool labels shows he was thinking about the temperature of colour across the sky, not only its shape. Church (1826–1900) was a leading Hudson River School painter and a pupil of Thomas Cole. The title places this group of studies in 1860–1880, when he travelled widely and produced many of his large oil landscapes.
