Visual Elements & Composition

Meaning & Symbolism

The sheet is a working reference for dress. Church, the American painter associated with the Hudson River School, travelled to the eastern Mediterranean and filled his sketchbooks with landscape, architecture and people. Here the attention falls on ordinary figures in the street, their hoods and wraps recorded with a traveller's care for what people wore and how they moved. The study shows a practice of observation that reached well beyond the landscapes he is best known for.
